Congratulations, you're engaged! Now for the fun part: the honeymoon. Read on for the top reasons you should leave your most special trip of a lifetime to the pros. (And leave the stress of planning to someone else!)
A few months back I popped over to Rick Steves’ page on Facebook to see what he had going on. We all know that Rick Steves is the godfather of travel, do we not? (We do). It goes without saying then, that when I spied his new post entitled “Our Climate Smart Commitment,” I had to read on.
You can read it here, but here’s the gist:
Travel is wonderful, awe-inspiring and (I would argue) necessary. Travel is also harmful to the environment.
We cannot, as responsible travelers, ignore the fact that the flights we take emit carbon dioxide into our earth’s atmosphere at alarming rates.
But there is something we can do.
Rick Steves is contributing $1 million in 2019 (breaking down to $30 per traveler in his guided tours) to projects in the Global South that fund “a diverse portfolio of climate-smart organizations that work to advocate for smart policies and laws, conserve biodiverse lands, support small farms, and develop climate-smart agriculture and forestry practices.” (Quotation taken from this post.)
I found it interesting that Rick Steves simply hadn’t chosen to pay airlines a fee to offset the carbon emissions produced by each traveler. That would make sense, right? Turns out, not so much.
Travelers, I’ve been doing a bit of digging (post Rick Steves-inspirational research!) and what follows is what I found out about carbon neutrality, and why Whisked Away will be doing something about it too.

Know the Difference Between a "Gut-Check No" and Nervous Excitement
Here's the scene: my friend Dre and I had just bussed it from Quito, where we were living, to some remote hot springs about two hours north of the city. Our afternoon was spent relaxing in those sweet simmering springs and having swimming races with some local kids. Every once in a while we'd lean back on a boulder or some such thing, check out the blue Ecuadorian sky and sigh with contentment. This was the life, man.
As I tend to do, I had planned the early afternoon return down to the minute. "The bus swings by at 5 PM so we have to hike back down the hill to meet it on the road. That means we have to be out of the springs by 4:30, blah blah." I don't mean to cast a wide net here, but it is fairly well known that things in Latin America do not always happen on time. Thus, when Dre and I arrived at the appointed spot at 4:50, smiling and proud of ourselves for being punctual, we naively waited for our bus for over an hour with nothing passing our way except for a few old Chevy's.
Hi travelers! Charlotte from Whisked Away here. As someone who lives, breathes and dreams travel, I get asked a lot about where the next “it” spots will be. Where are people heading and why? What are the “untouched” places where most tourists haven’t yet ventured?
At Whisked Away, we are a lot less concerned about the next “must-travel” destinations, and a lot more interested in finding out what our clients love. Iceland might be all over Lonely Planet right now, but what if you love everything about Latin America?
Go to Latin America! (No really. Go there now. It’s amazing.)
So, instead of a list of places that are soooo hot right now, here’s my own personal bucket list. It’s made up of places that I haven’t yet traveled, but would love to… not because they are popular, but because they sound fantastic.
Remember that lovely feeling you used to get as a kid, waking up the morning of your birthday? That wonderful “oh my god today is all about me!” feeling? The anticipation, the way the wrapping paper sounded when it finally ripped open under your capable, chubby kid-sized hands? The “Yessssss!” that emitted from your heart and soul when you found out that (oh holy of holies) you really did get the He-Man/She-Ra combo pack of action figures?
Do you miss it?
As adults, we totally get the shaft when it comes to anticipatory fun-times. Our lives are pretty well-planned, laid out and situated. We still get birthdays, sure, but it just doesn’t feel the same somehow. The He-Man/She-Ra combo pack fails to elicit the same excitement.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! What if there were a way to give ourselves and our loved ones the gift of beautiful anticipation? And what if that gift landed you at the airport with a piece of paper and an artfully researched itinerary that announced you would be spending the next two weeks in… Banff, Canada! Quito, Ecuador! Barcelona, Spain!
