How to Choose Your Next Travel Destination

Hi Travelers!  Here at Whisked Away, we pride ourselves in taking all of the travel planning worry and stress off your plate and giving you the Surprise Travel Adventure of a lifetime.  Why come home after a long day at work only to plop yourself back in front of the computer to stare at hotel reviews?  Why indeed!

But if you're into that sort of thing (or, um... obsessed with it?) we totally get that too.  That's why we wanted to share a bit of our process for choosing the loveliest travel destination for your next adventure so you can do a bit less planning and a bit more getting on the plane, already.

Step #1:  Choose Your Region

For most of you, this will be the easiest part of the process.  Within the different regions of our beautiful planet there is plenty of diversity, but there are also some overarching themes.  Brand new to travel and accustomed to your creature comforts?  Try Europe or North America.  Ready to expand your horizons, brush up on your Spanish or Portuguese and explore some ancient ruins?  Latin America!  (If this part already has you flummoxed, relax.  Anywhere you choose will be amazing.  That's what's so great about travel!)

Step #2:  Pick Your Travel Dates

Picking your travel dates is important for two reasons.  1.)  You'll be able to notify your boss/mom/significant other/pet sitter/mail carrier of when you'll be away.  2.)  You are less likely to give up on your dreamy travel plans altogether when you WRITE THEM DOWN.  (Go ahead and text a friend as well... that doubles your good travel possibilities!)

Step #3:  Look at Flights

Never heard of Google Flights?  Buckle up, friends because I'm about to blow your minds!  On Google Flights, you can choose your travel dates, departure airport and region, and it will show you what all of the flights would cost you within that region!!  Didn't catch that?  Check this out:

This is only a smattering of the results that I got when I searched for "Europe, October 14-28 flying from Charlotte, NC."  Clearly I would choose Dublin, and double-bonus for it being the shortest (and non-stop!) flight.  Google Flights + Whisked Away = love forever.

Step #4:  Choose Your Accommodations

Okay you travel genius! You've now chosen your region, travel dates and destination AND you've booked your flights.  That's awesome.  Now it's time to find your perfect sleepy-time spot.  Of course you can use sites like TripAdvisor (if you're into hotels) or Airbnb (if you do it responsibly) but there is another way!  I like to put the question to my social media contacts, because there is ALWAYS going to be someone you know, or someone who knows someone you know, that has been to your chosen destination and wants to talk to you alllll about it.  Or, you know, at least let you know where they stayed.

Step #5: Decide on Day Trips/Tours

Now it's time for the really fun stuff.  What do you want to see when you're finally abroad?  What do you want to experience?  Do you want to go it alone, figuring out public transportation and hours of operation and entrance fees?  Or do you want to book a day trip with a guide and let them take care of everything for you?  I always advise clients to book at least one guided day trip to a spot outside of the city they are visiting.  It gives travelers a chance to relax a bit and not have to worry about train schedules.  Another suggestion?  Look for the free walking tours of your chosen city for the first part of your trip.  They are based off tips and are overwhelmingly fabulous, plus you get a good idea of what you'd like to see next!

Step #6-14?:

Look at you go!  You've got the bulk of your trip planned.  Here are some other things that you might want to check out: weather, the US State Department website to see if there are any warnings for your chosen destination, visa requirements, vaccinations, festivals/events happening at that time, etc.

You're done!  Enjoy your well-planned fabulous adventure.  Let us know where you're dreaming of visiting in the comments below, or just email us to fill us in!
